A Delicious Family! by Autumn Stiles

Oh brave new world that has such people unite!

This brave new world is not just the island inhabited by calypso’s and calibans, but by the people who have woven the fabric of this quaint cultural quilt, think and eclectic, warm and cradling.

Jersey City the most diverse city on the on the east coast and the second most diverse in the country.

Where I flourished no flickering flame, but a blazing torch fueled by the aroma of a thousand nations that hangs thick in the air.

Mother said “music slides over rain slicked roofs that know no prejudice, yet contain it.

But whatever prejudices contained within the walls stayed that way, hidden, drowned in maita suffocated in spring rolls.

Buried under beef patties, pummed under pirogues. Quelled with quenepas.

I did not struggle with race growing up, people actually made shit up, added some spice the their personal pots, to make themselves more exotic I swear, everyone had a little Dominican or quyanese in them, dique?

Yeah everybody had that one Indian or black cousin. No one counted to be a brand, flowerless we just wanted to be jersey city.

 A Delicious Family!

OBAMA CARES by Renee Matthews Jackson

OBAMA CARES

 By Renee Matthews Jackson

* Dark child of distant ancestors do come

Awaken all the people that are sleep

Prepare the way with loudly pounded drum

Make no promise to us you cannot keep

Instead allow your leadership to grow

Into the hearts of those who fend you well

And share with you our need to have a go

Of what this nation must weigh and curtail

And we will stand in lines to give our vote

For greater than one person we promote

 ~*~

* Young one do not hold fear as your platform

Like those who are so bound and declare war

And look on betterment as now the norm

Erase the evils that held us before

Commit yourself to do the next right thing

Do speak and walk with dignity as lead

And watch the transformation that it brings

For you’ve been thrown into the midst of need

In honor hold your head to heights of peace

Today show us that there is an increase

~**~

* We know that you look to the future state

Where all are equal and with outstretched arms

Forgiving past behaviors of Black hate

We ask that God will keep you from great harm

Then, you with honest calm will lead the way

Where citizens unite with alms of joy

Like Jericho, the walls a crumbled fray

And round about swept up each wicked ploy

Where each one blends right in, with colored hue

For seasons have their sway in what to do

~***~

* Dear soldier, hands of healing set your pace

Engulf this country, yes, stir up the Earth

And let the sun of morning pique your face

Revive us with your portion of rebirth

Enlist to all the ears that will entreat

With words that do not candy nor do coat

That’s seen in glaze of eyes whene’er we meet

And proudly we will wear the badge of wrote

But speak the plainest truth one can behold

What transpires just now has been foretold

~****~

* How proud you’ve made so many of themselves

By standing as a man should always do

And when we see the year two-thousand twelve

We will repeat, and vote for you then too

For this new age dictates a different skit

And some will never fully understand

So keep on Brother never call it quits

For you have forces with you in this land

Your causes have to make a shift in tone

And know that you will never be alone *

Blue Lights Unto Heaven by Renee Matthews Jackson (In Memory of those slain on 9-11-2001)

Devastation appears on silent whim Standing, staring, as horror strikes us cold When we glance back, our face a picture grim Contorted by what has us in its hold

This day was like all others of the norm Devastation appears on silent whim Hate quietly dispensed in wretched form When we glance back, our face a picture grim

Billows of smoke shout anger in stark gray Standing, staring, as horror strikes us cold We suffer pain from loved ones passed away Contorted by what has us in its hold

There’s sadness in the hearts of many left As we try hard to forge our way ahead What of the villains that spent us bereft Repeatedly we tend to bury dead

But in these trying times we give tribute There’s sadness in the hearts of many left Retaliation’s War is not my suit What of the villains that spent us bereft

I pray for peace to come and settle now As we try hard to forge our way ahead The people of the Earth must blend somehow Repeatedly we tend to bury dead

O God of great and small please pierce our souls To issue comfort that remakes the world I’ll watch with gladness as goodness unfolds And witness smiles on faces that unfurl

Let’s throw away the harshness that does kill O God of great and small please pierce our souls And in these last days let the waters still I’ll watch with gladness as goodness unfolds

And in the end let generations stand To issue comfort that remakes the world Come join to make a chain of every hand And witness smiles on faces that unfurl

what color is a friend when you need one – Arthur T. Wilson

WHAT COLOR IS A FRIEND

WHEN YOU NEED ONE

What color is laughter?

What color is the rain?

What color is respect?

What color is pain?

What color is love?

What color is protection?

What color is warmth in somebody’s arms?

What color is a friend when you need one?

What color can GOD be?

What color is a friend when you need one?
