The Scottsboro Boys

1989

January 23: Clarence Norris dies at the age of 76

Effects:

1. The right to Counsel-“The court ruled they were denied the right to effective counsel in their first trial when the judge named all members of the Jackson County bar to defend them, effectively diffusing final responsibility for the case. (Patterson vs. Alabama, 1932)” (Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center)

2. Nondiscrimination in juror rolls-“because Jackson juror rolls excluded Blacks, the Court ruled the defendants had not received equal protection under the law. (Norris vs. Alabama, 1935)” (Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center)

3. The case of the Scottsboro boys shows the injustice that the U.S. had during that time period.
