Surrounded by her loving family and friends, Adelle “Adella Adella the Storyteller” Gautier transitioned on Tuesday, August 10, 2021. She was 73. A native New Orleanian, Adelle, known affectionately to the family as “Tessie”, was born on January 15, 1948, to the late Julia Watson Gautier and John Gautier.

She was a graduate of McDonogh #35 Senior High School, Class of 1965. Adelle earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dillard University in 1969 where she was initiated into the Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.

For over fifty years she captivated audiences of all ages with her animated and highly energetic performances as an artist and performer. From the Aegean Institute in Greece to the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico, she toured extensively – regionally, nationally, and internationally – sharing her energy-charged performance style which delighted audiences of all ages. As Adella Adella the Storyteller, she was a New Orleans culture bearer who engaged her audiences with stories drawn from personal, African, African/American, Caribbean, and European folklore and oral traditions. Adelle was loved and cherished by all who had the wonderful opportunity to be in her company.

She is survived by her loving and devoted daughters, Judge Tiffany Gautier Chase (Daryl) and Amber Easter Gautier Zu-Johnson (Jaysen); her cherished sisters, Julia Gautier Sears of Riverdale, Georgia; Venessa Washington of Lawrenceville, Georgia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Adelle was preceded in death by her loving parents, her five brothers, and four sisters. Adelle was a dedicated actress, storyteller, and performer who, for over fifty years, gave herself to our entire community.

Her family and friends invite everyone who was touched, inspired, and enthralled by Adelle to a Public Viewing on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Gallier Hall, 545 St. Charles Avenue. Relatives, friends, and members of the community are also invited to attend the “Final Curtain Call for Adella Adella the Storyteller” on Friday, August 20, 2021, at her beloved Dillard University, Lawless Chapel. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Rev. L. Jerome Smith, officiating. A private Interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
