The Trial of J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant

When the murder trial of Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam opened in Sumner, Mississippi, on a steamy September morning in 1955, few realized the town would be forever linked to the brutal slaying of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy from Chicago.

A great change is at hand, and our task…our common obligation…is to make that revolution, that change, peaceful and constructive for all. — President John F. Kennedy

This photo compilation is a memorial graphic honoring several Black individuals whose high-profile deaths sparked widespread media attention, public outcry, and demands for civil rights investigations. The graphic was compiled and shared by civil rights activist and commentator Bishop Talbert Swan (whose social media handle, @talbertswan, is watermarked at the bottom left).

The individuals pictured in this memorial collage include:

George Floyd (bottom right):

His murder by a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020 sparked global protests against police brutality and systemic racism.

Nolan Wells (bottom left):

An 18-year-old community college football player from Mississippi who went missing during a Fourth of July boat trip in 2026. His body was discovered two days later on Horn Island. The unresolved circumstances of his death drew national attention from civil rights leaders demanding full transparency and an FBI probe.

Breonna Taylor (center):

A 26-year-old emergency room technician, was shot and killed by Louisville police officers during a botched nighttime raid on her apartment on March 13, 2020.

Javion Magee (top left):

A 21-year-old truck driver from Illinois whose body was discovered near a tree with a rope around his neck in Vance County, North Carolina, in September 2024. The case generated immense public interest, though state medical examiners ultimately ruled the death a suicide.

Dennoriss Richardson (top center):

A 39-year-old father from Sheffield, Alabama, who was found dead in an abandoned house in September 2024. Because he had previously filed a federal lawsuit alleging police brutality against local officers, his family contested initial local suicide rulings, leading to an FBI investigation for added transparency.

Ajike “AJ” Owens (right center):

A 35-year-old mother of four who was shot and killed through a closed front door by a neighbor in Ocala, Florida, in June 2023 following a dispute regarding her children playing outside.
